![]() | In 1848 the Voortrekkers under leadership of Andries Hendrik Potgieter founded the town Zoutpansbergdorp, later renamed Schoemansdal, approximately 112 km (70 miles) to the north-west of the present Pietersburg. However, constantly menaced by hostile natives and troubled by malaria, the Trekkers were forced to abandon this flourishing town known for
| its game and ivory. The then government of the Zuid-Afrikaanse Republiek (ZAR) promised that erven would be allocated to the Trekkers in a new town to the south - a safer and healthier spot. In 1884 the Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek (ZAR) volksraad purchased the eastern half of the farm Sterkloop from Rooi Barend Voster and GL van Emmenis. The new town was proclaimend on 2200 morgen and 150 erven were made available. The town was named after the well-known General Petrus Jacobus (Piet) Joubert and on 31 July 1886 magistrate Dietlof Siegfried Maré wrote his first official letter from the magistrate's office in Pietersburg. Today this date is celebrated as the founding date of Pietersburg. On April 23 1992 Pietersburg received city status. The commercial, industrial, educational and administrative importance of Pietersburg established this dynamic young city as the capital city of the Limpopo province.
Today the Pietersburg region is a major residential, commercial and industrial centre which houses approximately 126 000 (1996) residents and a strong commerce and industrial component. Many large South African and multinational companies are situated here including Silicon Smelters (factory) the largest of its kind in the western world. Indeed such are the diverse sources of climate and soil, such is the mineral wealth and such the scenic and climatic magnetism of the environment, that the Pietersburg area may justly be ranked in productivity with the richest and residentially with the most attractive regions of the RSA.
